City of Sioux Center issued the following announcement on Dec. 16.
A new facility that will serve nearly every home and business in Sioux Center is now in operation.
Sioux Center’s new wastewater facility began treating wastewater in November and is now online.
“It’s been a long process and it is good to now see the result of that work and that long-term investment,” said Sioux Center Wastewater Department Head Zeke Ellis. “This plant has new processes and better technology, and we’re already seeing the benefits.”
The plant was designed to meet new, more stringent DNR standards and replace the community’s aging wastewater facility. It will treat the water to a higher standard and produce a cleaner effluent than the old treatment plant.
“We’re already seeing levels for ammonia and total suspended solids drop,” Ellis said. “The plant will also be decreasing nitrogen and phosphorous levels, and it has UV disinfection, which the old plant didn’t have.”
The plant’s technology gives staff real time data on all parts of the treatment process, allowing them to more closely watch the process and more efficiently keep the plant running smoothly.
“As we celebrate the completion of this major project, we also want to recognize the utilities staff. They keep standards high for service and are great stewards of our facilities,” said Utility Manager Murray Hulstein.
