City of Sioux Center issued the following announcement on Jan. 25.
The Lewis & Clark Regional Water System, of which Sioux Center is a member, is marking its 30 year anniversary this month. Sioux Center has been part of the organization since its inception in 1990, and Sioux Center Municipal Utilities Manager Murray Hulstein is a founding board member and continues to serve.
The Lewis & Clark organization has been constructing and operating a tri-state drinking water system that will benefit about 300,000 people in Iowa, South Dakota and Minnesota, drawing water from the aquifer under the Missouri River. Sioux Center is slated to be connected to the system as soon as mid-2022.
Lewis & Clark’s Articles of Incorporation were signed on January 29, 1990. The organization’s chairman, Red Arndt, of Luverne, and vice-chairman Hulstein are the only two original directors who are still serving on the board.
“This is quite the milestone for Lewis & Clark. A big thank you to Red and Murray for their more than 30 years of dedicated service and leadership,” said Lewis & Clark Executive Director Troy Larson, also thanking many others who have been part of the bi-partisan, tri-state efforts. “Here’s to the next 30 years!”
Currently, 14 of 20 Lewis & Clark Regional Water System members are connected, and the entire project is about 82 percent complete.
When Sioux Center is connected to the system in about 2 ½ years, the community is slated to receive up to 600,000 gallons a day from the system, which will increase the quantity of high-quality water available for Sioux Center as it grows. Construction on the pipeline to connect Sioux Center to existing pipeline in Beresford is anticipated to begin this summer to work toward the community’s planned 2022 connection.
