CITY OF SIOUX CENTER: Open Space Park Paving Project Adds Accessibility

City of Sioux Center issued the following announcement on Jun. 1.

Accessibility is the focus of a paving project at Sioux Center’s Open Space Park.

A crew has paved the access road that connects 7th Ave. NE near the current high school parking lot to the softball and baseball complex and park shed in Open Space Park. The Sioux Center City Council approved paving this road and a segment of sidewalk that will connect the existing sidewalk near Siouxnami Waterpark to this area.

“As we continue to grow and develop in this area of Open Space Park, what we’re seeing is quite a bit of traffic. Foot traffic, bike traffic, and our parks staff uses it on a daily basis,” said City Manager Scott Wynja. “This project really helps address accessibility and promote safety.”

The project also involves removing some of the gravel parking area adjacent to the baseball diamond and replacing it with green space. Ultimately, the plan is to connect the paved area with a sidewalk to the north, accessing the existing recreation trail near the Early Childhood Center.

“We’re working to make Open Space Park fully accessible from football to baseball to softball to restroom facilities,” said Sioux Center Parks Director Lee Van Meeteren. “A lot of our Park Board and park staff’s focus is to make our amenities more accessible, and this makes our sports complex accessible for all to come and enjoy athletic teams from both Dordt University and the Sioux Center Community School District.”
