City of Sioux Center recently issued the following announcement.
Construction in Progress for Lewis & Clark System
Construction work continues in connecting Sioux Center to Lewis & Clark Regional Water System’s water supply.
North of Sioux Center, on Highway 75 near Bomgaars, Carstensen Contracting of Dell Rapids, S.D., has completed boring under the highway and extending a 24-inch diameter pipe to the city. By boring the pipe under the ground, the crew was able to continue constructing the water system without disrupting traffic on the highway. The crew has completed boring in several locations and is now installing mains to connect those segments.
This is part of the ongoing work Carstensen Contracting is completing to make the connection from Sioux Center to a system connection in Beresford, S.D. Their work involves three different projects.
The first project began in the spring of 2019 and involves the construction of 11.2 miles of 24-inch diameter pipe that started at Beresford and headed east. This $9.8 million project is nearing completion.
The second project consists of the construction of 10 miles of 24-inch diameter pipe starting at Sioux Center and heading west, including the Highway 75 crossing. This $8.2 million project is scheduled to be completed in December 2020.
Construction on the third project is slated to begin in September. This $19 million project involves 12.6 miles of 24-inch diameter pipe between the Sioux Center and Beresford projects, which includes the Big Sioux River crossing. The project is expected to be completed around December 2021.
After Beresford’s new water tower is constructed, Sioux Center should expect to receive water from the Lewis & Clark system as early as spring of 2023.
“Not only will this add better quality and more quantity to our water supply,” said Sioux Center Municipal Utilities manager Murray Hulstein, “but this project will add more diversity to our water supply in providing Sioux Center with another reliable source of water as our community continues to grow.”
Sioux Center is expected to receive up to 600,000 gallons a day from the system, which draws water from an aquifer adjacent to the Missouri River. When complete, the Lewis & Clark Regional Water System will benefit about 300,000 people in its 20 member communities, including Sioux Center.
