IOWA LAKES COMMUNITY COLLEGE: Iowa Lakes Student Senate and Conservation Club to Receive Governor's Volunteer Award

Students

Iowa Lakes Community College issued the following announcement.

Iowa Lakes Community College is proud to announce that the Student Senate in Emmetsburg and the Conservation Club in Estherville will receive the Governor’s Volunteer Award at the Governor’s Volunteer Awards Virtual Ceremony at 10:30 AM on July 14th, 2021.

The Iowa Department of Transportation submitted the nomination for the Emmetsburg Student Senate and the Estherville Conservation Club in recognition of the Adopt-A-Highway project.

“The Emmetsburg Student Senate has four miles of ditches to clean, once in the fall and again in the spring. Over the years, many students from other clubs have helped and, in the last few years, the Iowa Lakes Softball team has worked with us. I have always tried to stress the importance of community service to our students; this award is because of the students’ hard work and dedication to the project. I am extremely proud of them,” said Bill Lapczenski, recently retired Director of Auxiliary Services at Iowa Lakes Community College.

The Conservation Club cleans up three miles of Adopt-A-Highway west of Estherville. The Conservation Club also assists local conservation agencies, private landowners, and nonprofit conservation groups by helping answer research questions, doing community outreach, and assisting with natural resource management.

“Our goal is to make our communities aware of conservation and help connect people with our beautiful natural resources of Iowa. Some of the roadsides in Iowa are seeded to provide highly diverse prairies and maintained for wildlife habitat. The amount of trash we find in just three miles is shocking to the students each year as a new cohort participates,” explains Drew Howing, Environmental Studies and Water Quality Program Coordinator at Iowa Lakes.

The Governor’s Volunteer Awards program, established in 1982, honors volunteers with a prestigious, state-level recognition award based on outstanding commitment and service.

Anyone interested is welcome to attend; the virtual ceremony does not require registration or RSVP. The ceremony replay will be available to view and share from Volunteer Iowa’s website for those who cannot participate during the ceremony.
