During Spring Break in March, Iowa Lakes Community College students from the Laker Life campus ministry volunteered their time serving others on a week-long mission trip to Chicago. Instead of spending the week somewhere warmer or just taking the week off, the students decided to work with underprivileged children and prepare and serve food at shelters for people experiencing homelessness.
“I will never forget this trip. It was a life-changing experience for me,” said Melody Kuhn, a sophomore from Pocahontas. “The purpose of the trip was not to change for a week but for the rest of our lives.”
Each morning, the students volunteered at Breakthrough Ministries, which provides meals and a warm place to spend the night for people without homes. The students prepared and served the meals. They also helped sort clothes and donations at the shelters.
Every afternoon, the students traveled to By The Hand, an after-school program for children. The Iowa Lakes students spent time with the children, helping them with homework, playing games with them, and being a positive influence in their lives. They also were given the opportunity to teach the children songs and deliver a hopeful message to them during their chapel time.
Kellie Schmaus, a sophomore from Estherville, added, “The trip was an eye-opening experience, and it changed my perspective on how I view life.”
“The mission trip helps teach students to become servant leaders,” said Brett Fuelberth, co-advisor for Laker Life. “We really want to thank the local churches and community members that help the students go on this life-changing trip.”
