Faculty Member writes Emmy nominated Music

59

Dordt University Associate Professor of Music Dr. Onsby Rose is part of a group nominated for a Southeast Emmy Award for “You Were There,” a musical piece written by Rose and performed by the Parris Island Marine Band from Beaufort, South Carolina. The band was led by Mark Pellón, with narration writing done by Victor Norris.

“I have been writing professionally for a number of years,” says Rose. “Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought music I wrote would be included in a project that could receive a recognition like this. Just being nominated is truly incredible. It is up to God if it goes further, but even if it doesn’t, being able to say I am an Emmy nominated composer is pretty cool!”

The project came to fruition through a conversation between Rose and Pellón about writing a work for the band that would recognize frontline workers during the Covid-19 pandemic. “I wrote it and had it to their musicians in May where I flew down for a week to work with the band on the musical prep,” says Rose. “The week after I came home the band recorded the work and created the submission that was sent for consideration for an Emmy.”

According to the Southeast Emmy Awards website, they serve in “identifying and celebrating television excellence at the local and regional level of The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.” Rose’s piece is competing in the musical composition and arrangement category.

Dr. Rose brings enthusiasm and excellence to his work, something colleagues in the Dordt Music Department appreciate about it him.

“Since joining the Music Department at Dordt University, Dr. Onsby Rose has distinguished himself and drawn international attention to the excellent musical activities happening on our campus,” says Dr. John MacInnis, associate professor of music. “I know Dr. Rose will be the first to give God all the glory for this prestigious nomination. We are thrilled that he is a part of our team.”

The award banquet will be held on June 18 in Atlanta, where nominees will receive the results.
