The Iowa Lakes Community College Music Department held the 32nd Annual Jazz Festival on Thursday, Nov 3, 2022, on the Estherville Campus in the Janice K. Lund Performing Arts Center. This year’s festival clinic featured professional jazz musicians: Joey Gulizia, percussion; Andy Hall, bass; Dan Cassady, trombone; and Steve Smith, keyboards.
“I love jazz festival day! First, we welcome many middle and high school students to the campus, where they learn about jazz from professional performers and teachers. Then, we end the day with an amazing concert featuring professional jazz musicians playing alone and with our college jazz band and vocal jazz groups! It’s a concert you won’t want to miss!” exclaimed Carol Ayres, Professor of Instrumental Music.
Each year, the Jazz Festival provides an opportunity for music, education, and entertainment to come together. The day begins with a morning performance by professional jazz musicians. Then, the middle and high school students participate in clinics on jazz improvisation, percussion, and bass. Finally, the high school jazz bands attend additional clinics in the afternoon.
The Jazz Festival concluded with an evening concert performance featuring the guest jazz artists, the Iowa Lakes Jazz Band, and the Iowa Lakes Vocal Jazz Ensemble.
