NCC Enhances Emergency Medical Training through a Grant from the Lyon County Riverboat Foundation

Northwest Iowa Community College has strengthened its Emergency Medical Service program training through a grant from the Lyon County Riverboat Foundation.

The $26,000 grant helped pay for the purchase of equipment to be used in the college’s simulation ambulance and the new EMS lab located in Building H on campus. Included in the grant are a power cot, stair chair, simulated defibrillator, Lucas 2, jump bags, an apartment set and smart-manikins.

“Emergency Services Education is fortunate that NCC and the Lyon County Riverboat Foundation assisted in funding such state-of-the-art equipment. Not only will the equipment benefit our initial Emergency Medical Services Students, but also firefighters, law enforcement, and continuing education students such as CPR, current EMS Providers and other public safety officials as well,” said Kevin Miller, coordinator of emergency services.

The new equipment will be used by students for hands-on skill practice and clinical simulation for the Emergency Medical Technician Program. Students who complete the EMT course at NCC often work as volunteers in area EMS teams throughout northwest Iowa.

The manikins and dedicated lab space which can be set up like a patient’s home will allow students a more realistic experience when arriving on a scene.

“These spaces, in combination with high fidelity manikins thanks to the Lyon County Riverboat Foundation will let all students that use the space immerse themselves within the experience as if they were at a real emergency scene; with real patients, victims, and suspects.  This is highlighted with a mobile simulation ambulance that can be used to transport “patients” from the scene to the “hospital.”

The equipment will be housed in the soon-to-be completed $9 million expansion/remodel of the healthcare building.
