Northwest Iowa Community College issued the following announcement on November 4.
The Sheldon Community School District and Northwest Iowa Community College are excited to announce that they are on pace to reach the $1.4 million goal for the joint Turf Field project. To date, $1.2 million or 87% of the goal has been raised. The project includes construction of a professional grade turf surface on the current Orab football field and upgrading the scoreboard to a state-of-the-art digital video scoreboard.
Cory Myer, Superintendent of the Sheldon Community School District says, “We are extremely grateful for our friends and partners who share our vision on making this project a reality. This project is appealing to many people because it will truly benefit so many entities, and we are thrilled to the project progress. The community support just solidifies that this project is a welcome addition to Sheldon.”
The turf upgrade is a collaborative project between the Sheldon CSD, Northwest Iowa Community College and the City of Sheldon. The new playing surface will be used for the Sheldon CSD football team, soccer program and the marching band. Additionally, Northwest Iowa Community College will be utilizing the grounds when they begin their intercollegiate soccer program, which is slated to begin in Fall 2024.
“This project is advantageous for all involved,” shares Dr. John Hartog, President of Northwest Iowa Community College. “We are building more than just a turf field; we are building relationships. The College, the school, the city, businesses, and industry sponsors are partnering together to construct a high-quality field, and by sharing this resource we save money. The field should enable the college to introduce intercollegiate soccer in 2024, and soccer should result in increased student recruitments and enhanced collegiate experiences. This in turn will positively impact the local economy. It’s a win-win for all involved.”
The goal is to have fundraising completed before December 31, 2021. Groundbreaking for the project is slated to begin in Spring 2022, with use by the Sheldon CSD in the Fall of 2022.
