Dordt University issued the following announcement on Nov. 6.

The Defender Clay Dusters, Dordt University’s club trap shooting team, recently participated in the Iowa Collegiate Shooting Sports Conference at the New Pioneer Gun Club in Waukee, Iowa. Dominick Ver Meer, a freshman engineering major from Pella, Iowa, placed in three categories: first place in high overall (HOA); second place in sporting clays; and third place in skeet.

“The Iowa Collegiate Shooting Sports Conference Shoot was a great experience,” says Ver Meer. “The opportunity to go and shoot was great. The competition at the shoot was good and it was a lot of fun to go and shoot against other schools from across Iowa.”

Dordt’s trapshooting club was represented at the competition by faculty adviser and Communication Professor Dr. Tom Prinsen, in addition to five students: Ver Meer, Jason Enerson, Ashayla Soodsma, Caleb Langgin, and Grant Van Zee. While Covid-19 has limited the ability to practice regularly, the team typically meets every Tuesday in Rock Valley, Iowa, and welcomes all levels of skill.

“It has been especially rewarding to watch our more experienced athletes work with our less experienced team members,” says Prinsen. “Our practice scores have been improving and that practice paid off on Saturday.”

The club was founded at Dordt by current president and student Jason Enerson, a junior studying engineering from Estherville, Iowa. Enerson had a strong desire to attend Dordt, and a passion for shooting competitively.

“I was really impressed with how the team handled themselves,” says Enerson about the competition. “We had a lot of solid showings with one of our freshmen winning the entire shoot. I was impressed how some of the shooters really stepped up and presented our college in a great way.”

As an institution of higher education committed to the Reformed Christian perspective, Dordt University equips students, faculty, alumni, and the broader community to work toward Christ-centered renewal in all aspects of contemporary life. Dordt, located in Sioux Center, Iowa, is a comprehensive university named to the best college lists by The Wall Street Journal, Forbes.com, Washington Monthly, and Princeton Review.
