A closing reception will be held for the first annual High School Art Showcase on March 30 at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center Art Gallery. Students whose art is on display will participate, in addition to their art teachers. The reception is also open to the public.
The showcase features graphite, charcoal, chalk, watercolor, oil, acrylic, photography, mixed media, and ceramic artwork from area high school students. Dordt’s art faculty emeritus and regional artist, Jake Van Wyk, served as this year’s juror.
Gallery Director and Associate Professor of Art and Design David Platter says he was impressed with the high levels of technical achievement and focus demonstrated throughout the show.
“As we invite teachers to nominate the good work being done in art classrooms across our region, we are creating a platform for these young artists to be recognized and, to a degree, more fully known,” he says. “It provides both a collective snapshot of our artistry as well as gives us glimpses into the personalities and wanderings of individuals in our community.”
Platter points to Dan Seidell, art critic and author of God in the Gallery, who says, “Loving your neighbor includes looking at their art.”
“It’s worth taking the time to pause to acknowledge and receive what our artists have to offer,” he says. “Art speaks volumes, and it is a pleasure to take moments out of our routine to ‘listen’ to these excellent expressions from our young artists.”
The exhibit is on display in the Campus Center Art Gallery on Dordt’s campus from March 1-30.
