A bridge replacement project in Hartley will close part of Highway 18 for roughly six months.
The N’West Iowa Review reports that Highway 18 will be closed in both directions between Tyler Avenue and Vine Avenue as the two-lane Waterman Creek bridge is replaced west of the city.
The project, costing more than $1.9 million, will put a concrete-beam bridge in place of the current concrete-slab crossing originally constructed more than half a century ago.
“The condition of the bridge was such that replacement was prudent,” Iowa Department of Transportation District 3 Transportation Planner Dakin Schultz told the N’West Iowa Review.
A detour will begin east of Sanborn and take traffic south from Highway 18 on Highway 59 to 360th Street, head east on 360th Street to Vine Avenue, and then go north to Highway 18 on the western edge of Hartley.
The project is being handled by the Christensen Bros. Inc. of Cherokee and is expected to be complete by October.
