Dordt University issued the following announcement on July 16.
Matthew Van Eps, a senior at Dordt University has been named the 2020 NAIA Men’s Track & Field National Scholar Athlete of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross County Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Van Eps, a Prinsburg, Minnesota native, maintains a 3.709 cumulative GPA while studying Engineering at Dordt. He won the NAIA National Championship in the 800 meters in early March in a time of 1:53.41.
“I am grateful to see Matthew recognized by the USTFCCA with this award. It is special because it recognizes a combination of academic and athletic excellence. These are both important pillars of athletics at Dordt under the Defender Way. Matthew works tremendously hard to develop the gifts God has given him, and I look forward to seeing how he can continue to develop as a person during his senior season,” said Dordt track and field coach Craig Heynen.
Van Eps has won two individual NAIA National Championships during his career and has been a part of a relay that claimed a title in 2019. He’s a 16-time all-conference performer and a six-time NAIA All-American. Van Eps was also named a CoSIDA Academic All-District and All-American earlier this summer.
