The Iowa Lakes Community College Board of Trustees met Tuesday afternoon for their regularly scheduled board meeting on the Algona Campus.
Robert Leifeld, Vice President of Administration, began Tuesday’s meeting by introducing Theresa Waechter, Algona Campus Supervisor. Wachter provided a campus update and shared her excitement for the upcoming school year.
“We are busy preparing for the start of the upcoming school year and look forward to welcoming students back to the Algona Campus,” said Waechter.
Iowa Lakes is scheduled to begin classes on Tuesday, August 23, with students moving back on campus Friday, August 19, and Sunday, August 21.
Leifeld introduced Laura Howard, Distance Learning Manager, and Theresa Umscheid, Executive Director of the Iowa Community College Online Consortium (ICCOC). Howard has been employed at Iowa Lakes Community College for seven years and holds her bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University. Umscheid has been employed at Iowa Lakes for 29 years and holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa.
Howard shared further insight into the online and distance learning courses offered at Iowa Lakes. “Iowa Lakes offers affordable online course options and student-focused advising for students who seek to earn a degree, transfer to a four-year college or university or as a non-degree seeking student.”
Online and distance learning at Iowa Lakes provides students with the flexibility to complete coursework at times that work best for their schedules within course start and completion dates. Additionally, Howard shared, “We see many students enroll in the online and distance learning courses at Iowa Lakes during our Winterim Term. The Winterim Term is held between fall and spring, with the opportunity to earn needed credits in as little as four weeks.”
Iowa Lakes online and distance learning student, Carter Nath, Lu Verne, Iowa, is earning an Associate in Arts degree. He shared, “I chose Iowa Lakes because it is close to home, but also because I knew that enrolling at Iowa Lakes would provide me access to the resources needed to help me achieve my academic goals.”
Dan Lutat, Executive Director of Foundation and Government Relations, received board approval to accept a donation from A&B Solutions.
The next meeting of the Iowa Lakes Community College Board of Trustees will be held on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, at the Administration Building, 19 South 7th Street, Estherville, Iowa, at 4:30 pm.
