Algona High School Graduate Earns $1,000 Scholarship From Tietz Entrepreneurial Center

The Tietz Entrepreneurial Center at Iowa Lakes Community College awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Jordynn Garrison for the business idea she pitched at the 2021 Summer Entrepreneurial Experience program.

The Entrepreneurial Experience, an 8-week program hosted by the Tietz Entrepreneurial Center, teaches high school students interested in becoming entrepreneurs the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and business start-up, including business creation and operations.

“The program was very beneficial! I learned so much about the financial aspects of a business, and where I am the weakest when it comes to the finances! If a future business is in store for me, I will have a better picture of where to start,” explained Garrison.

At the program’s culmination, participating students pitch their business plans to a panel of judges for the opportunity to earn the scholarship. The recipient may utilize the scholarship to attend Iowa Lakes Community College or the college of their choice upon high school graduation.

During the Entrepreneurial Experience, Garrison created a business plan for her business idea: a bookstore café called FIKA, which stands for “Friendship, Independence, Knowledgeable, Authenticity.” FIKA would be in a college community and cater to college and high-school students.

Her bookstore café would offer books for check-out and purchase, sell beverages and pastries, and offer rental meeting space. The bookstore café would be people and pet-friendly and feature an outdoor area for relaxation and reading.

Garrison graduated from Algona High School in 2022 and is currently enrolled and attending online courses through Reformation Bible College.
