Dordt Junior Joya Schreurs To Hold Piano Recital on February 18

The community is invited to the piano recital of Dordt University junior Joya Schreurs. The free recital will be held on Saturday, February 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium. A public reception will follow.

The recital will feature repertoire from the major style periods, including compositions by Bach, Haydn, Rachmaninoff, Griffes, and Berthume. A notable feature of the repertoire is the pairing of Rachmaninoff's Prelude in D Major (Op. 23 No. 4) and Prelude in B Minor (Op. 32 No. 10). While the first prelude is lyrical and lush, the second exhibits a solemn melody that gives way to an agitated section, utilizing the full tonal range of Dordt's Steinway. The recital will also include a piano trio with Dordt juniors Karli Vanden Brink of Orange City, Iowa, on violin and Aaron Galloway of Pella, Iowa, on cello.

Schreurs, of Sheldon, Iowa, is majoring in literature and writing as well as theological studies with a minor in Piano Performance. She has studied piano with Dordt music instructor MaryLou Wielenga since 2016. In the spring of 2022, Schreurs gave a recital at First Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center, and in the fall of 2022 she accompanied Dordt student Emma DeVries’s senior voice recital. In addition to accompanying for the Dordt University Concert Choir, she plays violin in the Chamber Orchestra and Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra.
