The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office will take in more money as the county jail holds inmates for the federal government.
The O'Brien County Board of Supervisors discussed and approved a contract during its meeting on Oct. 13, which would increase the reimbursement the county receives per inmate from the government. The new contract states that the county will make $80 instead of only the previous $70.
Sheriff Allen Schuknecht commented on the new contract.
“We were making quite a bit of money and we didn’t want to jeopardize that,” Schuknecht said, according to nwestiowa.com. “The feds have different piles of money they use to pay us and they suggested that we raise our per diem and then that we would transport the prisoners to like the medical and court for nothing. We used to hand them off to marshals and then we’d come back in two weeks and get them. Now, because of COVID, we go down there and kind of stay. So it costs us a little more to do that.”
